About Siracusa Recreation Center & Park
Our History
In the year of 1972, a softball team was organized with the following players Ken Bradford, J. Chapman, Landry Granger, Alvin Jones, Wayne Jones, Robert Singleton, August Trim, Leroy Trim, Mgr., Oliver Williams, Henry Woodbury, Marvin Young, Charles Poole, Wilbert Poole, Charles Jones, and Joe Hills. The players had nowhere to practice or play ball. The St. Mary Parish School Board had 19 acres of of undeveloped property lawnmowers, sweepers and swing blades to clear an area large enough to practice and play ball. That was the beginning of what is now called Siracusa Recreation Park. In the year 1973 under the leadership of William Bradford as our council we were able to clear another area for a basketball court. In the year of 1974 under the leadership of Leroy Trim Sr., Siracusa Recreation Committee was organized with the following individuals; Martha Young, Mary Triggs, Gwendolyn Brown, Cynthia Ramagos, Barbara Wilson, and Ann Poole. Upon approval of the committee Mr. Trim began to seek funds from the parish to purchase playground equipment. In the year of 1976, the committee ordered their first equipment, after 33 years most of the equipment still remains in the park. After several years of ups and downs, we continue to strive for excellence. One of our greatest supporters was Mrs. Julia Ruffin, who was pioneer in her own right.

In the year of 1985, Council Loylis Duhon contacted Mr. Trim about putting a recreation center in the area, after several meetings with the council and the community, Mr. Trim was informed that a Board of Commissioners had to be formed. On June 25, 1985 a Board of Commissioners was formed under ordinance #961, with the following members: Leroy Trim, Chairman; Richard Martin, Vice Chairman; Alvin Wilkerson; Dwight Smith; and Ann Poole Commissioners. In that same year a contract was signed to build a recreation center. In the year of 1987, the doors of Siracusa Recreation Center were opened. Since that time we have accomplished many things, such as a walking track, a large pavilion, 6 small pavilions, a horseshoe court, a tennis court, two baseball fields with lights, a large concession stand, a computer room, a conference room, a weight room, a snowball stand, a head start classroom, and a 60 passenger bus.

Past members who have served on the Board of Commissioners are Leroy Trim Sr., Chairman; Paul Guildry; Dwight Smith; Ann Poole; Lloyd Smith; Paul Bonnee; Demetrius Wilson; Raymond Coler; Gilbert Ramagos Sr.; Phillip Dural Sr.; Lee Otis Bobb; and Barbara Wilson, Board Secretary.
